As God is generous with us, we, too, are a generous people. Each month we focus on a particular mission which has been chosen by the congregation. Collenbrook United Church has been and continues to be incredibly generous and passionate about mission and outreach. The Mission of the Month (MOM) are local, national, and international charities offering new opportunities to serve God’s people and earth in new ways.
One Great Hour of Sharing is an offering that makes the love of Christ real for individuals and communities around the world who suffer the effects of disaster, conflict, or severe economic hardship, and for those who serve them through gifts of money and time. Today, projects are underway in more than 100 countries, including the United States and Canada. In the 1990s, receipts have exceeded $20 million annually. While specific allocations differ in each denomination, all use their One Great Hour of Sharing funds to make possible disaster relief, refugee assistance, development aid and more.
Justice Rescue is a PA-based non-profit dedicated to rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. Since 2011, Justice Rescue has taken in and rehabilitated nearly 3,000 dogs to loving forever homes. There isn’t a day that goes by that they don’t receive dozens of abuse complaints. Some animals are in such poor condition that they require immediate and often expensive medical care. Justice Rescue does not euthanize for space, and at least a dozen of their current animals that were severely abused and are not adoptable will enjoy sanctuary life with Justice Rescue, the only team they trust. Please donate generously to help Justice Rescue save and rehabilitate as many animals as they can.
Richwood WV is a small town located at the foot of the mountains along the Cherry River. Much of the town is in the flat land, and the houses are built along the hillsides. Richwood is a small struggling town of 2000 people, depressed with the closing of a sawmill, and nearby coal mines. Richwood is the gateway to the Monongahela National Forest, with some of the most beautiful scenery and hiking trails in WV. Therefore, the community is turning to tourism as a source of revenue.
On June 23, 2016, the flash flood caused water to pour off the mountain, literally running through houses from back door to front. Then the Cherry River rose and flooded the bottom land. The only strip shopping center was flooded, closing the Dollar General and the Rite Aid. The high school and middle school will not reopen this season because of flood damage. Students are meeting in other area schools nearby.
Despair has been high, yet families are banding together to be “Richwood Strong.” They are proud of reaching out to help one another. Long Term Recovery has begun. Our mission trip has an immediate need for manpower and for money for travel, equipment, tools, and rebuilding supplies. We have reservations at Richwood Presbyterian Church. They have a shower, a sleeping area for cots and air mattresses, a kitchen, and will provide a base from which to work.
If you have a week to help, we would love to have you as a volunteer. YOUR TIME IS OUR GREATEST NEED! Please consider prayerfully going with us. We will teach you all the skills you need and give you ample information to prepare for a great experience.
In 2016, CWS distributed thousands of blankets around the world. Our congregation can be part of an even greater response in 2017. We will reach families fleeing their homes, recovering from disaster and more.
Evan Goryl, 17, along with his father, Frank, mother, Susan, and younger brother Aaron, 16, is channeling the entire family’s passion for art and humanitarian efforts to aid ceramic craftsmen and people in need of clean water in Haiti – a country still reeling two years after a devastating earthquake rocked the island nation to its core. As of now, the Goryls said the auction has more than $1,250 in bids, enough to buy Haitian-produced water filters for 35 families in need of clean drinking water. Evan said one day he’d like to see every Haitian in need of clean water equipped with a filter.
